I’ve have seeing bunch of kids with the flu in the recent weeks. This is definitely a different flu season we are dealing with this year.
Just a few words for parents out there. Be alert. The H1N1 2009 or swine flu this year is widespread. We were seeing it throughout the summer but in the past few weeks (at least at the clinic I work at), we are seeing a bunch of sick kids. Fortunately, most have been fairly mild and seemed to recover without any problems. That being said, I’ve seen a few pretty sick ones that have had to be hospitalized.
So, what’s a parent to do? I mean, your kids have to go to school (unless they are home schooled-I guess). In any case, the virus is widespread and you can pretty much be exposed anywhere. If your child suddenly gets high fevers, cough, congestion and/or runny nose, be alert. This may not be the usual “cold”. It would be reasonable to give them something for the fever and call their doctor. Remember that with the flu, treatment is best when it is started within 48 hours of onset of symptoms.
- Doctor’s offices are getting busy with so many sick visits. However, don’t let this deter you from calling and getting that appointment.
- Alert the doctor’s office what your child’s symptoms are and they can make the appropriate arrangements. If possible, put a mask on your child so that we can limit the spread. The office will usually provide one for you.
- It’s OK to give your child medication for fevers on the day of your appointment. You don’t have to let them run the high fevers without medication to prove to the doctor how high the fevers get.
- Your doctor will evaluate and decide whether treatment and what treatment is appropriate. If H1N1 is suspected, the treatment is usually Tamiflu. And yes, it does come in liquid.
- Don’t forget that the usual steps we take for “flu” is still applicable here. In addition to any prescription the doctor gives, the patient should have plenty of rest, plenty of fluids, and remember hand washing at home is important.
- If you have any questions or concerns whether you or your child should be seen by a doctor, call your doctor’s office and ask. Don’t wait until you have to go to urgent care or the emergency room.
Hope everyone can stay as healthy as possible this holiday season!
