So, you may have heard about fibromyalgia or read about it or maybe you think you have it.  Obviously, you can do some research on the topic yourself before going in to see your doctor.

Basically, fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome that is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and specific tender points.  Usually, patients will also have sleep disturbance, fatigue, headache, morning stiffness, paresthesias, and anxiety.

  1. Your doctor will get a detailed history relevant to your symptoms and examine you for 18 specific tender points.  You need at least 11 of these tender points for the fibromyalgia diagnosis.
  2. Your doctor may also advise some additional blood tests to screen for other rheumatological issues.
  3. Treatment is usually multidimensional and include patient education, medications, cardiovascular exercise, physical therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
  4. Other complimentary therapy include acupuncture, biofeedback, or hypnotherapy.  Some people try chiropractic therapy, massage therapy, or even trigger point injections.
  5. You can discuss the treatment options with your doctor.  Keep in mind that this is a chronic condition so you will need to keep up with the treatment and talk to your doctor about adjustments in your treatments as the condition changes.
  6. If necessary, your doctor can refer you to a specialist for further evaluation or treatment.  However, it is not unusual for your primary doctor to make this diagnosis and start your treatment.

Don’t forget to ask your doctor about any support groups or specific resources that may help you in dealing with fibromyalgia.
