There have been a lot of visits for heel pain lately. So I thought I’d do a short post on this topic.
Heel pain is common for many adults. The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis (fash-ee-i-tis). However, you can also have Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, stress fractures or fat pad atrophy (when the fat pad around the heel thins out). Your doctor will ask about your pain and examine your feet in order to make the diagnosis.
- You’ll want to tell the doctor more specifically about the location of the pain, when you get it, how long it’s been there, how long it tends to last, and what makes it better or worse. Tell your doctor about any trauma or injuries and any activities you’ve been engaged in that might relate to the pain.
- Very often, the doctor can make the diagnosis without doing any additional tests so don’t worry if you are not asked to get an x-ray.
- You should ask the doctor what is the condition that you have. Sometimes, people go see the doctor, get a prescription and go home without ever asking the doctor what is it they have. This is important because you’ll want to give any and all your medical history to another doctor if you ever change your insurance/health care provider or move away, etc.
- The doctor may likely give you a prescription for an anti-inflammatory medication for pain. Be sure to ask how much and for how long it would be safe to continue taking the medication. Be aware of any severe side effects.
- If the doctor doesn’t offer you suggestions on exercises and stretches you can do, you should ask for this. Offices often have handouts they give patients for these common conditions. Are there shoe inserts that might help your pain i.e. a heel cup? Are there certain types of shoes that you should avoid? (This might be more relevant for women).
- Ask the doctor when should you return for a re-evaluation if your pain is not better. Inquire about physical therapy and whether it would be beneficial for you. Your doctor will let you know if he thinks you need to be seen by a podiatrist.
